The history of Chinese medicine has predominantly highlighted the contributions of male clinicians and scholars, with only scanty recognition given to the achievements of female practitioners. Some prominent women did emerge, their recognition often stemming from the advent of movable woodblock printing during the Song Dynasty, which allowed for the recording and preservation of medical teachings. Examples include Zhang Xiao Niang Zi, known for her understanding of Yong Ju (skin carbuncles and furuncles); Tan Yun Xian of the Ming Dynasty, celebrated for her work on Nu Yi (female medicine/gynecology); and Zeng Yi of the Qing Dynasty, whose treatises advanced the Wen Bing (Warm Disease) tradition and addressed female health. However, many other female clinicians have been lost to history, their legacies surviving only in fragmented accounts or the confines of legends.
